Food network greenlights wine special starring comic genius John Cleese
Food Network has greenlit several new series and a special about wine hosted by actor John Cleese, it was announced today by Brooke Bailey Johnson, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Food Network. Viewers can look also look forward to seeing more of their favorite series in 2004, as the network announced renewals for several existing series, including two starring chef Bobby Flay.
Shot at Cleese's scenic Santa Barbara ranch, "John Cleese On Wine for the Confused" is slated to air sometime next fall. The hour-long special will debunk the myths and fussiness that makes wine intimidating to the average person. Moreover, this helpful insight will be delivered in the witty manner for which Cleese, himself a wine connoisseur, is best known.
"We believe wine can be fun, so we're tremendously excited to be working with John Cleese. He's a not only a true aficionado, but his sensibility and approach are a natural match for Food Network," stated Brooke Johnson, Food Network General Manager.
Two series hosted by chef Bobby Flay have been extended. Having delivered substantial year-to-year ratings increases-- for example a 47% increase (a .63 HH rating in 3rd quarter 03 vs. a 43 HH rating in 3quarter 02) in its weekend "In The Kitchen" timeslot (Saturdays at 1:30 PM), "Boy Meets Grill," has been given a 26 episode renewal. Slated to begin airing in first quarter of '04 are 13 episodes focused on the urban grilling phenomenon, an area of expertise for Flay, the powerhouse behind New York City's popular eatery Mesa Grill and numerous cookbooks.
The additional 13 will air in June. Food Network has also picked up Flay's weekly half-hour food travelogue, "FoodNation," committing to an additional 13 episodes that will air in second quarter '04. The series follows the affable Flay across the country on an exploration of the foods and traditions that make American cuisine unique. Along the way, he cooks with friends and local legends, accompanied by renowned musical groups from the area.
