Getty's Celebrity Chef Series to spice up fall and holiday season
The Restaurant at the Getty Center kicks off the second year of its popular Celebrity Chef Series this fall with book signings by a slate of preeminent guest chefs and special meals inspired by their most recent books. A highlight of the series will be an appearance by culinary legend Julia Child, who will return to the Getty on Wednesday, December 5 for a lunch and signing of the 40th-anniversary edition of her classic book, Mastering the Art of French Cooking. (Child's first Getty appearance in February, 2001 was sold out.)
Other chefs to appear this fall and holiday season are Colman Andrews, editor-in-chief of Saveur magazine and author of Saveur Cooks Authentic Italian, on Thursday, October 18; Anne Willan, president of cooking school La Varenne and author of Cooking with Wine, on Wednesday, November 7; and Patric Kuh, restaurant critic for Los Angeles magazine and author of The Last Days of Haute Cuisine: America's Culinary Revolution, on Saturday, November 17.
Each Celebrity Chef Series event includes a book signing by the author, with books and related holiday gifts on sale, followed by a sumptuous meal prepared by Getty chefs Terri Buzzard and Helene Kennan, with optional wine pairings.
Jim Dodge, general manager of Bon Appétit Management Company, which provides food services for the Getty, said, "We are delighted to be continuing this series that has proved so popular with visitors. Pairing culinary arts with visual arts richly enhances the overall Getty Center experience."
The Celebrity Chef Series began in the fall of 2000, and guests to date have included--in addition to Julia Child--John Ash, Bruce Cass, Carol Field, Diana Kennedy, Ruth Reichl, and Jancis Robinson.
The Restaurant also occasionally offers special meals in conjunction with Getty public programs. To complement a conversation with artist Alexis Smith hosted by Getty visiting lecturer and Los Angeles Times contributor Barbara Isenberg on Thursday, October 18, part of the Getty Research Institute's Art Matters series, the Restaurant is offering a special prix-fixe dinner. Smith is noted for her conceptual art, collages, and assemblages, and created the installation Taste that is on view in the Restaurant.
