Julia Child has inspired millions of people
For over 40 years now, Julia Child has inspired millions of people--from the professional chef to the home cook to beginner--with her passion for food, her gifts as a teacher and her wonderfully honest sense of humor. Julia is the most enduring star still actively appearing on television.
Now in "JULIA CHILD'S KITCHEN WISDOM," a two-hour retrospective treasure chest of her kitchen wisdom and wit, Julia shares the basic lessons she has mastered along the road of her remarkable career. It is a show that began with more than 830 episodes of Julia cooking on TV, including what have since become legendary trials, errors and remedies experienced at the stove or chopping block.
It is also full of, as Julia likes to call them, quick, snappy answers to cooking problems: How many minutes for boiling greens? What are the right proportions for a vinaigrette? What's the cleanest way to skim off the fat? What temperature is best for roasting a leg of lamb? It's the next best thing to having Julia in your very own kitchen. From salads and vegetables, to omelets (for one or for 300) and crêpes, to spit-roasted chicken, pan-roasted lobster and Steak Diane. In fact, when asked about her preference in food, Julia responded to a panel of news reporters in a rarely seen clip: "Red meat and gin – that's the secret."
"JULIA CHILD's KITCHEN WISDOM" will be aired nationally over PBS in December 2000 (air dates and times to be scheduled by individual stations). The program is broken into 4 segments. Each contains excerpts from Julis's cooking shows, including the long-missing first episode of "The French Chef," as well as personal memories from her colleagues and fans: Jacques Pépin, Charlie Gibson, Martha Stewart, Emeril Lagasse, Jasper White, Alice Waters and Thomas Keller. Location photographs, taken by Paul Child from 1963-1983, appear throughout the show along with some of Julia's more memorable quotes.
A companion book, JULIA'S KITCHEN WISDOM: Essential Techniques and Recipes from a Lifetime in Cooking, will be published by Alfred A. Knopf this November. It is a book that began as Julia's own hand-written kitchen notes, gradually compiled from her own cooking. As Julia writes, "My own little loose-leaf served me well, and I am hoping this book version will give you, too, as well as me, many of the essentials needed for brief instruction and problem solving."
"JULIA CHILD'S KITCHEN WISDOM" is a special television event celebrating Julia's remarkable contribution to the American palate and lifestyle. The show, along with the companion book, and a home video/DVD version of the program, will evoke humorous memories and provide spirited entertainment for her generations of fans. It is a timely and heartfelt tribute to an American culinary hero and legend.
